N.S.W. BEATS ENGLISH LEAGUERS

VISITORS LACK ENTERPRISE [United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright! (Received TO a.m.) SYDNEY, June 7. The English Rugby League team was defeated by New South Wales yesterday by 18 points to 14. Australia’s test match prospect has been materially enhanced as a result of New South Wales’ convincing victory. There was an attendance of 49,519 spectators and the gate-takings amounted to £4,125 19/3 Throughout the second half New South Wales played without McKinnon, who was carried off with torn leg j ligaments. j England's defeat was the more remarkable, t as the forwards won 17 scrums to 10 in the first half, and 18 to 10 in the second. Watkins, half-back, lacked enterprise, and Jenkins, five-eighths and Atkinson, centre, rarely penetrated. As a consequence, the faster wings were not exploited to full advantage. Brough was superb in fielding, kicking and tackling. j The teams were as follows: j England.—Brough (capt.), Smith, Atkinson, Brogden, Hudson, Jenkins, Watkins, Beverley, Hodgson, Woods. Miller, Armitt, Silcock. New South Wales.—Beaton, Ridley, Dave Brown (captain), McKinnon, Hurley, Norman, Mork, Prigg, Pearce, Gibbs, Curran, Fairall. Steilr.

Sensational Opening. Although England began with a sensational try in the second minute of play. New South Wales led by 15 points to 9at half time. The best move of the match was initiated by Hurley in his own 25, reverse passing enabling Prigg, Beaton and Ridley to come straight down the field. Ridley crossing from the right flank to score. Sheer pace in a 30-yard race enabled Brown to follow his own kick and cross after the bell had sounded. England constantly pressed in the second spell, but were unable to finish off movements owing to splendid covering by the defence. Smith and Hudson were both tackled a yard from the corner flag. Jenkins varied his tactics by cutting through and giving Brogden an easy try. Scorers for New South Wales were Gibbs, Ridley. Brown and Slohr. McKinnon kicked three goals. For England Brogden scored two tries and i Hodgson kicked four goals. I
