KAITAIA STREETS
IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED The Public Works Department has practically completed, as far as possible, till next summer, the re-surfac-ing of the main street of Kaitaia. The work is apparently being carried out with great thoroughness. Particular attention has been given to the foundations, and it has been necessary where these were weak to remove large quantities of materials and substitute substantial metal. Now that levels have been fixed and the street has been given the right camber the appearance of the business part of the town has been vastly improved. The channelling which had to undergo some alteration so as to make it fit in with the height of the road, looks very neat and. if kept clean, should be able to cope much better than formerly with surface water. It was noticeable with the last heavy downpour that the water was confined to the channels instead of spreading over the street and footpaths,- though there were some obstructions • since removed. The enlargement of the drain across Commerce Street to Bank Street will have a most beneficial effect and the drain will be able to cope with all but the most abnormal floods. The full effect of the re-laying of the street will not be seen till the work is completed next summer, when the final surfacing will be done.
