NO WIND FOR YACHTS
RACE ON SATURDAY SPOILT , A trophy race for yachts, 16 feet and und'er, conducted' by the Whangarei Cruising Club on Saturday afternoon, practically developed into a farce through lack of wind. The course lay from Kioreroa to Onerahi and once round the regatta course. The competing craft had great difficulty in punching the tide down to, the starting point, and the despatch of the field was delayed an hour. When the flags went down, the Ocean Waif was the only boat on the mark and she got away about a quarter of a mile in front of the Muru, with the Margaret, Sunbean and Sea Urchin well back and practically out of the race.
The Muru passed the Ocean Waif off Kaiwaka flashlight what wind there was giving the boats a flat run. Shortly afterwards, the Muru abandoned the contest and continued l on; down the-harbour. The Ocean Waif was the only craft to complete the course and secured the win.
Next Saturday, yachts of both classes will compete in a race to Taurikura. Mr. S. Bell, ex-Sunbeam, has purchased: the Auckland 16-footer Charm, and will have her brought to Whangarei shortly after Easter. This welcome addition, to the local fleet will take pari in the last race of the 1935-36 season, which is to be wound up with a camp-fire gathering down the harbour.
