BIG WHANGAREI CATCHES
WHITE BUTTERFLY COMPETITION
The Horticultural Society have now to hand the results of the white butterfly competition. It is evident that prize-giving has stimulated the efforts of the youth of the district, in an endeavour to get rid of a well-known pest.
Two have handed in 7000 butterflies, three over 5000, ten over 2000, twenty-one over 1000, while those handed in total 63,000.
This represents about half the catch, so that it is potent that good work is being done. As all gardeners benefit from this action, the Horticultural Society is still open to receive donations.
The president, Mr C. V. Stringer, stated today that a number of citizens had donated prizes, but the opportunity was still open to any that feel disposed to assist the effort. Some twelve months ago parasites were liberated in the district by Mr W. A, Given, but only in small numbers. As the parasite takes time to establish itself the society is sparing no pains to keep the numbers down until the maximum results can be felt.
