TARIFF BOARD NEEDED IN N.Z.

ISpecial to “Northern Advocate "1 PALMERSTON N., This Day. “Questions relating to tariffs v are continually cropping up and a permanent board would be able to give valuable assistance to the Government,” said Mr W. W. Cook, when speaking of the need for the establishment of a permanent tariff board at a meeting of Palmerston North manufacturers last evening. The secretary of the Wellington , Manufacturers’ Association, Mr A. W. Nesbit, said the Government was at present considering the matter of Japanese straw hats, which had been landed in New Zealand ready to wear at 10/ a dozen. Men’s felt hats were being handled at 24/9 a dozen. New Zealand manufacturers of straw hats could not compete against those prices, even though they used Japanese braid in making them. It was decided to ask the Wellington executive to take up the matter of the introduction of a tariff board.
