DAMAGE TO INDUSTRY
TRAWLERS ENCROACHING WITHIN LIMITS
A meeting of the council of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce was held qn Wednesday night, the president, Mr H. F. Menzies, presiding. There was a good attendance and six new members were enrolled. A letter was received from Mr F. Franich, of Mangawai, regarding the encroachment of trawlers in the Hauraki Gulf. Since they had been allowed to operate there, he had noticed a big difference in the industry. No inspector was employed now, and, consequently, trawlers and seine net boats had been operating within half-a-mile of ‘the shore, causing great
damage to the industry, not only by destroying the small fish, but also by destroying the feeding grounds. He suggested that their operations should be curtailed within certain limits.
It was the decision of the council to write to the Minister of Marine supporting the views expressed by Mr Franich, and asking him if lie would thoroughly investigate the matter and, if possible, enforce suitable regulations.
