HOKIANGA BOWLING

The Buxton Shield matches were held on the Hokianga Club’s green 1 on January 29th and 30th, in perfect weather. There was a good attendance of visitors from northern clubs, including the competing teams, namely, two from Kaitaia, three from Kaikohe, and three local teams. The green was in good order, and play was keen. The president of the Hokianga Club welcomed the visiting teams, wishing them successful play, etc. As there were eight teams entered for the competition, it was played in two sections.

The first rounds were played on Wednesday, January 29, the results being:— Section A. —Kaitaia A 2 wins, 1 loss; Kaikohe A 1 win, 2 losses; Kaikohe B 2 wins 1 loss; Hokianga A 1 win, 2 losses. Section, B.—Kaitaia B 3 losses; Kaikohe C 3 wins; Hokianga B 2 wins, 1 loss; Hokianga C 1 win, 2 losses. Kaikohe C were declared winners of this section.

The semi-finals were played on Thursday morning. Kaitaia A and Kaikohe B played off. Kaikohe B winning, and thus becoming winners of Section A.

In the afternoon, the winners of Section A and Section B, namely Kaikohe B and Kaikohe C, played the finals, the winners being Kaikohe B. At the conclusion of the competition, the president presented the Buxton Shield to the skip of the winning team, also a small cup to each successful player. The winning team comprised Messrs. Leigh (skip), Routley, King and Jolly.

The runners-up were also presented with a small cup each. At the conclusion of the presentation, the president, Mr McCown, thanked the visiting players for their interest in the competition and their sporting play. The skips of the visiting teams replied, thanking the Hokianga Club for a most enjoyable time. A very hearty vote of thanks to the ladies for their able management of the refreshments, was carried by acclamation.

This concluded a very enjoyable two days’ tournament.
