WHANGAREI MAKE GALLANT RECOVERY

But Lose Shield On First Innings

,WHANGAREI MADE SUCH A< GALLANT RECOVERY IN THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE DARGAVILLE SHIELD MATCH WITH RODNEY, CHALLENGERS, THAT ALTHOUGH THEY. HAD TO PART WITH THE TROPHY, THE STING WAS LARGELY TAKEN FROM DEFEAT.

Their batting in the second innings, which commenced shortly after lunch yesterday, was scintillating, and they improved the last shining half-hour by dismissing two of the Rodney crack batsmen. All round, the cricket yesterday was much more spectacular and interesting than on the opening day,, when Rodney, mainly by plodding methods, stuck at the wickets all day.

Badeley struck the keynote of Whangarei's second knock by taking eleven runs off the first six balls sent down by Farman. With Lawrie and Badeley together, the best batsmanship of the match was seen; Badeley hit both Vipond and W. Dunning out of the ground, and, with Lawrie scoring by effortless strokes all round the wicket, runs came at the rate of about ten per over. Dashing: Partnership. The dashing partnership ended when Lawrie hit a four', nearly a six, off Wyatt, and was skittled next ball. 79—2—34. Badeley, who revealed himself as much more at home in an aggressive role, continued scoring briskly, with Bright relying more on clever placements of ground shots. With his score at 46, made in half an hour, Badeley skied a ball from Wyatt into the hands of third man. Scoring now slowed up, with correct batting against an accurate attack, and fielding which lived up to the best Rodney traditions. Anderson tossed the ball very high in the air, and Bright fell into his leg trap, hitting one right into the hands of Vipond, fielding near the chalk line. After the tea adjournment, Jennings and Wilson carried On the good work, both employing a refreshing variety of strokes, the drive predominating. Jennings got a couple of dazzling shots away to leg, and then smacked one hard to E. Dunning, standing at silly leg, about three yards from the bat.

Seven wickets were down before the Rodney first innings total was passed, but the best partnership for Whangarei was to come from the last pair, both Onerahi men, Fyfe ami Burch.

They scored run for run when first together, but then Fyfe' opened up with hard hitting to race away from his club-mate, hitting a lofty six off W. Dunning, whose seven overs cost 62 runs.

On several occasions Fyfe cocked shots near fieldsmen, but his batting, and also that of Burch, was most refreshing, and they looked set for a still more solid stand, having increased the score by 77, when Wilson closed the innings.

Rodney In Again.

. With only thirty-five minutes remaining for play, and Rodney requiring- 87 for outright victory, it was only a gesture, but it worked with the qdick dismissal of E. Dunning and Vipond, each in attempting a defensive stroke.

In the last few overs, the batsmen were fed with slows to encourage mishits, but W. Dunning accepted the challenge by taking a four and a six from Dunn.

At the conclusion of the match the Shield was handed over by Mr C. H. G. Hedditch, president of the Whangarei Association, who added a few apt words. Mr F. Reid, manager of the Rodney team, replied, thanking Whangarei for their hospitality and extending a warm welcome for a return visit later in the season. Scores were: — WHANGAREI.
