The Englishmen batted first, Smith and Sims opening. The score mounted at the rate of two runs a minute. The latter had two lives, being dropped at 20 and 38. Smith was bowled by a beautiful ball from Marshall when the score was 69. The outgoing batsman made 32, Sims being then 31. Hardstaff joined Sims, but lasted only seven minutes, ball beating him all the way: 81—2—4. • j
Mitchell-Innes was at the wicket only two overs when he made a poor stroke, lifting a ball from Whittle into Williams' hand behind the bowler: 86—3—4. The total reached 100 after 70 : linutes' play, Sims attaining 50 in the same time. Five minutes later he was caught by Cameron at cover, off H. Marshall, after an attractive innings, which included eight fours: 106—4—54.
Human joined Langridge, and the total at lunch was 120 for 4 wickets.
