GREAT SPORT AT
THRESHER LANDED; TWO GET AWAY
Tutukaka, the base for deep-sea fishing, discovered by overseas anglers at the close of last season, was gladdened yesterday by the successful initiation of the present season. Mr Norman Mair, of Pokere, Bay of Islands, went out on Mr R. F. McKenzie's launch, Zita, and, casting lines a mile east of the Pinnacles, and about 14 miles from Tutukaka, soon was playing a game fish. After putting up a hard fight for 38 minutes, a thresher sh.ark, weighing '2431b, was brought alongside. Even when in the boat the shark ! continued to show its vicious nature, j snapping its jaws, and causing those aboard to move further into the bow.
A little later Mr Mair hooked a mako, which frequently leaped clear of the water, revealing itself as at least ten feet in length. After half an hour, however, it disgorged bait, hook and all, and escaped.
When nearihg home in the evening, a smaller mako got away in exactly the same manner, leaving some of its gill behind... "The best day's sport I have ever had in a boat," said Mr Mair, recounting his experiences to a "Northern Advocate" representative today.
