A JETTY AT ONERAHI
TOWNSHIP’S NEED HARBOUR BOARD MAKES A MOVE The question of a jetty at Onerahi was brought up at the meeting of the Whangarei Harbour Board today, by Mr E, L. Whimp. Although the people had been a bit Jax in getting something better for themselves, he thought that the board .should do something to assist. Previously the facilities had been better than the town warranted, but at present there was nothing. ‘We promised before we shifted the timber of the old wharf we would do something,” he said. “The town has a population of 500, and it is reasonable for them to expect a jetty of some sort.”
A public meeting had been held at Onerahi, when it was decided to try to get the foreshore vested in the Town Board. As far as the Harbour Board was concerned, the cost had been prohibitive. Mr Whimp moved that the sec* retary be instructed to look into the matter and report to the next meeting.
Mr K. M. Stevens: “The population alone makes it necessary for something to be done.” Mr R. H. Allan: ‘The only sensible course would be to provide a wharf, at which coastal vessels could berth.” Mr Whimp: “It would obviate wear and tear on the roads, but the expenditure is not going to bring in any more revenue,”
Mr H. E. Hewlett: T agree to getting a wharf where coastal vessels can call. If it were provided it would probably do more business than any others in the harbour.” ■
Mr W. M. Fraser, the engineer, said he would take borings where the old wharf met the land, and give an estimate.
Mr Stevens: “I think we should provide Onerahi with facilities before we do it for aircraft.” The resolution was carried.
