MURDER VERDICT— The coroner returned a verdict of murder by a person or persons unknown at the conclusion of the inquest on the Rev. Harold Cecil, whose body was found at his vicarage, Sydney, on December 13. The only fresh fact brought forward in the evidence was that the right hand pocket of the vicar's trousers had been torn out in his struggles with the murderer.

STAVISKY CASE DAMAGES.—In the Stavisky case the Court awarded £500,000 damages to the various societies which bought the forged bondsissued by the Bayonne municipal pawn shop on behalf of Stavisky. It is doubtful whether the seven culprits held liable can pay, as they are all ruined.

ABYSSINIAN MOBILISATION.The booming of drums stirred to frenzy the crowd, which gathered to hear the Emperor’s decree enforcing increased mobilisation. Every Abyssinian capable of bearing arms has been ordered to hold himself in readiness to leave for the front. Today’s mobilisation order is estimated to involve 300,000 men. The Government asserts that 13 Italian aeroplanes have been brought down since the opening of the campaign.

BRITISH FOOTBALL.— The Scottish Football Association has decided to allow Saturday’s League matches to be played. Results of English soccer matches played fhis' afternoon: —First Division: Bolton drew with Everton, 3—3. Third Division, southern section: Milwall beat Bournemouth, 2—l; Newport beat Southend, 2—l. No decision has yet been made regarding Rugby League, but it is expected that Satmatches will be postponed. The Welsh Rugby Union decided to cancel all matches till after the King’s funeral. The Football Association announces that Cup ties will be played.

HOPE ABANDONED.— Hope has been abandoned for the rescue of a Marseilles-Ctinis seaplane, which was brought down 30 miles from Ajaccio, Corsica, in rough seas with three of the crew and three passengrs.

MADAME STAVISKY FOR U.S.A.— Madame Stavisky has left for England en route to New York, where she has a two-months’ engagement in a cabaret.
