BLOWN OFF TRACK
35-TON RAILWAY CRANE [Special to "Northern Advocate.”! PALMERSTON N., This Day. A strong gust of wind in the Manawatu Gorge on Saturday moved a repair crane along the rails over a gap in the permanent way on a bridge, and the Railway Department’s repair gang had a hard day’s work before it could be brought back on to the rails. The accident occurred at a bridge spanning a deep gully, 35 feet deep, about a mile on the Palmerston North side of the Gorge railway station. Repairs were being effected to the bridge, and the steam crane had arrived at 7 a.m., to assist in the work. Two hours later a sudden gust of wind swept through the gorge, and, in spite of the application of the brakes, the wind was sufficiently strong to move the crane and edge the front bogey on to a section of the bridge, from which the rails had been removed. The crane was finally restored to the track at 7.30 in the evening. No trains were delayed.
