COMMERCE STREET

TAR-SEALING HELD UP » NO TENDERS RECEIVED. ALTERNATIVE STEP TAKEN [Special to “Northern Advocate”J KAITAIA, This Day. A special meeting of the Kaitaia Town Board was held in the County Chambers last evening, when the secretary, Mr W. H. Atkins, informed the members that no response had been received to the board’s recent advertisements calling for tenders for the tar-sealing of the main street from the County Chambers to the corner of Blencoe Avenue, a stretch of some 30 chains. Insufficient Inducement. BLK 78 The chairman, Mr J. T. B. Taaffe, said that the failure of contractors to tender was due probably to the fact that the limited scope of the work offered was not sufficient inducement to warrant their transporting the necessary equipment for so great a distance. He suggested that were it not possible to carry out the work by tender, it might, in view of its urgency, be advisable for the board itself to undertake the preliminary work, such as kerbing, preparing the road surface and procuring the crushed metal. This completed, they could engage the services of an expert to do the tar-sealing. As an alternative to this, Mr -Taaffe suggested! that greater inducement could be' offered tenderers by increasing the length of tar sealing previously decided upon. Referring to the last suggestion, Mr Peace said that he did not favour this, as extra levels would have to be taken and this would entail work which would cause further delay. P.W.D. To Be Approached. I

The secretary stated that he had been in communication with the Public Works engineer, who had suggested that the difficulty could be overcome by either approaching the Main Highways Board to do the work, or by the Town Board itself doing it by means of small contracts. Mr D. Archibald said that he favoured approaching the Main Highways Board rather than the board doing the work by way of small individual contracts.

Mr T. Clark was of similar opinion, and moved a resolution to this effect, which was given the board’s unanimous support.
