SUCCOUR FOR JEWS
BRITISH MISSION FOR NEW YORK (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, January 8. The “Manchester Guardian” says an important mission, headed by Sir Herbert Samuel and Viscount Bearsted, chairman of the Shell Transport and Trading Co., Ltd., is going to New York on January 15 to discuss means of settling Jewish refugees from Germany. No definite scheme has been formulated, but proposals will be considered to raise a large fund to train and settle Jews in other places than Palestine, which is unable to absorb great waves of migrants. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” points out that there is little hope of doing anything for Jews through international pressure, ■ as the German Government, if not completely indifferent to foreign opinion, is unable to check the wilder elements that desire to squeeze Jews out of German life. The problem is how to get the Jewsout of Germany as fast as the Nazis are depriving them of their means of livelihood. The majority seem to- be caught like rats in a trap.
