BOTH MACDONALDS TO STAND [British Official Wireless.l (Received 12.30 p.m.) ' RUGBY, January 7. Nomination day for the Scottish Universities by-election has been fixed for January 11, Mr Ramsay, MacDonald will be nominated, but is still uncertain how' many opponents he will have. The result of the poll will be declared on February 3. In Ross and Cromarty, the chairman and vice-chairman of the local Conservative Asspciation have resigned as a protest against the association’s decision to oppose the candidature of the Dominions Secretary, Mr Malcolm MacDonald, who has been invited to stand by the Liberal and National members of the local Liberal organistaion, and who will have .the support of the Conservative officebearers, who have resigned, as well as of other leading Conservatives. Mr .MacDonald’s Labour opponent will be Mr Mac Neill, who was defeated in a very close contest by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Walter Elliot, in the General Election. A Protest. 5 “Although the executive is loath to oppose the National Government, it feels that there has been such a complete disrgard of the country’s intrest that there is no alternative but to oppose Mr Malcolm MacDonald” is the text of a statement issued after a meeting of the Ross and Cromarty Conservative Association’s executive. It was unanimously decided at the meeting to invite Mr Randolph Churchill to address the association on January 11, with a view to his adoption as the Conservative candidate. The statement added: “The utilisation of the vacant seat in Rosshire, in order to find a home for a member of the Cabinet who was rejected by another constituency, was unanimously and severely condemned.”
