NAPIER COUNCIL AND £IOO,OOO “MUST BE A GIFT,” SAYS LABOUR PROMISES MADE. [Special to “Northern Advocate.”} HASTINGS,. This Day. The Speaker-elect of the House of Representatives, Mr W. E. Barnard, said that no further interest would be charged or payable on loans which were raised for earthquake rehabilitation purposes by private individuals in Hawke’s Bay. The promise of the Labour Party that the loans will be free of interest will become effective- immediately on completion of the present interest-free period of three years allowed by the last Government. The people of Hawke’s Bay, may be assured that no further interest will be charged. Mr Barnard, who is the Labour member for Hawke’s Bay, said that the loan of £IOI,OOO advanced to the Napier City Council following the earthquake would be considered as a grant. Application which had been made by the Hastings Borough Council and the Hawke’s Bay River Board were not Covered in the pre-election promises by Mr Savage, but these requests would be the subject of negotiation | with the Government.
