SPORTS HINTS FOR BEGINNERS
RUNNERS. If you want to run races of the distance of. a mile or less you need a slightly different training from that required for country or long-distance .runs. You must be able to have a reserve of speed and be capable of doing short bursts when needed. You must also know how to “get off the mark.” Slow running and • walking are the best foundation for all training. But, besides that it is a good thing to practise holding your breath and running four or five quick strides. This improves your “wind,” which is just as important for sprinting as for long-distance running.
Another good exercise is marking time “at the double.” That means lifting your knees as high as you can at each step but keeping your body upright all the time. Hold your breath sometimes when doing this also.
