NEARING THE END
MEMBERS WORK HARD SESSION ALMOST FINISHED ELECTION ON NOVEMBER 27, IFrom Our Parliamentary Special.] WELLINGTON, This Day. When the House of Representatives resumed after the,, week-end recess, everyone commenced to work hard. Several bills were considered during the day, but none of them was of very great importance, and they were passed without amendment.
One important alteration that was made concerned the Law Practitioners’ Amendment Bill, one clause of which, as originally drafted, proposed to prohibit any unqualified person, with certain exceptions, from performing any of the duties of a solicitor.
These provisions were made much wider when the bill came back from the Statutes Revision Committee, but, according to Mr Forbes, the Prime Minister, the particular section of the bill was still a matter for argument. As a result, Mr Forbes said that he proposed that the clause be dropped altogether.
During the day nine bills were passed. They were the Coal Mines Amendment Bill, the Urban Farm Land Rating Amendment Bill, the Immigration Restriction Amendment Bill, the Rent Restriction Bill, the Administration Amendment Bill, the Colonial Light Dues Bill, the Whaling Industry Bill, the Law Practitioners’ Amendment Bill, and the Judicatory Amendment Bill.
In the evening two measures, the Public Works Bill and the Land Laws Amendment Bill were introduced by Governor-General’s message, while several amendments were also brought forward, including amendments to the War Pensions Amendment Bill and the War Veterans Allowances Bill. After the supper adjournment, Mr Forbes, following a caucus of Government members, announced that the date of the general election had been fixed for November 27. The House adjourned at 10.20 p.m.
