TENNIS SEASON

WHANGAREI TENNIS CLUB trophies presented. The official opening of the Whangarei Tennis Club for the new season was held on Saturday afternoon in brilliant weather. The doubtful conditions of the morning gave way to hot sunshine and a light breeze. The courts were declared open for play by the president, Mr F. Higginson, who also presented trophies won last season. The trophies were presented as follows: — Championship. Men’s Singles.—Jß. S. Finch; ladies: Miss J. Mclntosh. Ladies Doubles, Mrs A. G. Sheen and Miss E. Johnson; men’s doubles, L. T. Pickmere and D. Wilson. Combines: L. T. Pickmere and Miss E. Johnson. Handicaps. Men’s Singles, A Grade. —D. Wilson. Combines. —A. S. Hooper and Miss P. Ryder. Ladies Doubles, B grade.— Miss U. Woodman and Miss Whimp. Men’s Doubles, A. Grade. —R. S. Finch and A. G. Sheen. Ladies’ Singles.— Miss Stevens. The progressive competition was won by Miss M. Stevens and C. Waymouth. at mander park OFFICIAL OPENING. In the vicinity of 60 players attended the opening of the Mander’s Park Tennis Club, held in glorious weather. The president, Mr H..W. Beehre, made a short speech after which the patron, Mr W. Jones also said a few words. Miss L. Beehre drove the first ball and the courts, looking in much better condition than last year, were utilised for a progressive tournament. Prizes donated by Mr G. Gillett (Ladies), and Mr M. D. Findlay (men) were won by Mrs F. Primmer and Mr F. Morgan respectively.
