PLAZA THEATRE. “Call of the' Wild,” the picturisation of Jack London’s famous story of the gold rush in the Klondike, is one of the outstanding films to be shown in Whangarei this year, and it attracted another overflow house to the Plaza Theatre for its initial screening on Saturday evening. It is packed with drama, romance and comedy, and is acted in a setting, the beauty of which is enhanced by splendid photography. There is action in every minute, as the thrilling story' of the search for gold in; the frozen north is unfolded, Clark Gable and Jack Oakie head the male cast, and the story follows their discovery of the plan, of a rich mine, and their search for it. Loretta Young, the only woman in the picture, enters the story when she is rescued from wolves by the two adventurers. She is the wife of the rightful owner of the mine, but he has .disappeared and is feared dead. With Jack Oakie surpassing himself as a ,fun maker, and the romance, between Clark Gable and Loretta Young developing, the story takes on an added interest, which increases as her husband appears on the _ scene, at the head of a band of unscrupulous gold hunters. The closing scenes reach' great heights, and the end comes all too suddenly. It is a most enjoyable film, and one which will continue to attract big houses during its stay in Whangarei. It- IS supported by another feature film, which is as good, in its way, as the main attraction. It is an absorbing mystery story, in which a womah journalist unmasks the villain.
