FOUR MINERS DEAD

RESULT OF POISON GAS. TRAGEDY AT BROKEN HILL. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A mining tragedy occurred at Broken Hill, when four men were trapped and overcome by gas in a seepage tunnel used for the drainage of waste water. The victims were: Richard Slee, manager of the mine; Joseph Giffin. chief engineer; Albert Taylor, shift boss; and Harold Milligan, labourer. The failure of the system had caused foul air to penetrate into Broken Hill’s main street, and the four men entered the tunnel to investigate. Rescuers risked their lives by breathing poisonous air and wading up to their necks in foul water. They fc-und Milligan still breathing, but he died on the way to the hospital.
