' AFTER holding the professional golf championship since 1931, Andy Shaw has been dethroned by Alex Murray, who completed ; a phenomenal week’s golf with the finest round ever seen at > Shirley. i ' in the 36th hole final Murray was " 3 down after the 18th, but he covered. ’ the first nine in the afternoon in 32 to square, and went on to win 2 and i 1. He completed the x-ound in 67, 1 equal to the course record held by ■ Shaw. : For the afternoon battle, the gals lery numbered well over 1000, and it 5 was treated to brilliant golf. Both had “birdie” 4s at the fifth. 1 Murray at the sixth hit a magnificent 7 iron 10ft from the pin and holed for a “birdie” 3 and a win, making Shaw J only 1 up. “ Murray played magnificently from * here on and annexed the champion- ; ship. - Murray at the tournament has 1 won all three championships for which he entered, and Shaw, who won alb last year, was runnerup, on each occasion this year. During the week Murray proved himself to be the best iron player 6t the meeting, while, his driving was equal to any. Shaw played steady golf, but could not reach the brilliance of his younger opponent. Incidentally, with the strain of big golf, Murray, who is usually only 9.5, has lost half-a-stone in weight.
