OTAGO BEAT WANGANUI. VISITORS OUTCLASSED. I Per Press Association. — Copyright .l DUNEDIN, This Day. Otago played its third representative Rugby game this season, when it defeated Wanganui yesterday afternoon by 26 points to 3. The weather and ground conditions were perfect. Although Otago did not show same form as against Southland on Saturday, the visitors were quite outclassed, and were kept on the defence for the greater part of the game. Wanganui adopted spoiling tactics, and their occasional thrusts were made when Otago passing broke down. Campbell, the Wanganui centre, was easily the pick of the visitors. Bullock-Douglas was absolutely starved for the ball, but, taking the rearguard as a whole it fell far below inter-provincial standard. The Wanganui forwards played with vigour, but were generally beaten for the ball in the scrums. The tactics of the visiting backs harassed the fast Otago backs, but the latter linked up in spectacular movements. Proctor, wing three-quarter, scored three tries and Simon (half-back) one. MacFarland converting three, and Gillies (five-eighths) potted two goals. Campbell scored a try. which was not converted for Wanganui. KANFTJRLY SHIELD. MID-WEEK GAMES OPPOSED. (Per Press Association. — Conyright.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. After considerable discussion in committee on Tuesday evening, the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union decided to recommend to the New Zealand Rugby Union that Canterbury should not be called on to defend the Ranfurly Shield on Wednesdays, on account of the strain imposed on players, who were having Shield games on Saturdays. The fact that the players would already have completed a hard northern lour before the Shield games commenced was another point the union took into consideration.
