GISBORNE RAILWAY
SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT. BETTER ENGINES. [Special to “Northern Advocate.”} GISBORNE, This Day. A substantial improvement should result from the decision of the Railways Board to place on the GisborneMotuhora railway section two engines of a type more powerful than those at present operating. The date at which the new units will be put into service is not yet known. The condition of the engines used on the line in recent years has been the subject of many complaints, and it is not’ long since the Chamber of Commerce registered strong objection' to the maintenance in the service of these old and badly-worn engines on a section which includes one of the stiffest grades in New Zealand. Settlers of the Matawai-Motuhora area also have maintained a strong protest against use of the obsolete units on the section.
