THE MODEL HOBBY

| ENGINEERING * EXPERIMENTAL | i PLANS OF THE NEW BODY i CLUB WELL UNDER WAY The second meeting of the Whangarei Model. Engineering and Experimental Club held in the Winter Show ■buildings was well attended last night. Mr. S. J. Snow presided. Various schemes for the welfare and well-being of the club were discussed, and the gathering, representative of many branches of the hobby, was enthusiastic, there being no room for doubt that the club would prosper. The establishment of a workshop was a proposal advanced by Mr. Snow. He thought that the club should have an assemblage of partlyfinished models. He hoped that members would encourage boys to start on something not too big. The use to which funds should be put was discussed, and Mr. F. J. Howie moved that all money raised, until further notice, should be conserved in the bank. The proposal met with approval and the motion was passed. “Away From Workshop.” “We found ■by experience in Auckland that when a man had finished work at the shop he wanted to get away from tools,” said Mr. Rodgers in advocating lectures and practical work on alternative nights. He thought they would have no difficulty in getting men qualified to lecture on different classes of models, and hoped that meetings would be held away from the workshops. Mr. J. P. Woods sponsored a motion that im the meantime club members carry on work in their own homes and that the club meet twice a month —one night for practical work and the ether for lectures. The motion was carried. * To have a drive for the collection of broken toys \yas Another scheme put forward by Mr. Woods. He suggested that perhaps the Boy /Scouts might co-operate in the collection and members could repair the broken playthings fer distribution to the children of unemployed] men. There was one objection raised to this proposal by Mr. Snow. He thought that the bby who made a model did so purely for the model’s sake. The reconstruction of the toys would become j the responsibility of the older mem- j bers, and that was not exactly what ] was wanted. However, the objection was waived, and, on Mr. Butler’s motion, it was decided to hold a big boat and toy drive. The, following committees were appeinted:: —Publicity, Messrs. Howie and Snow; collection. Messrs. Woods and Steadman; distribution and repair, Messrs. A. Weaver and A. McDonald. Schedules for the model classes at the next Winter Show were fully gone into and a list: was drawn' up and approved. Messrs. Snow, Howie, Woods and Butler were made a/ deputation to’ the Winter Show Committee in reference to next year’s exhibition and the acquiring of a tank for sailing purposes.
