TAR BARREL EXPLODES

MEN SERIOUSLY BURNED UNUSUAL ACCIDENT [Special to “NoTttiern Advocate."} AUCKLAND, This Day. In attempting to discover, with the aid' of a lighted match, whether there was any tar in the bottom of a barrel, two men were seriously burned yesterday afternoon. The men, Mr. H. Pickering, storekeeper, aged 43, married. of 290 Sandringham Road, and Mr. W. D. Hammond, labourer, aged 47. of 47 King's Avenue. Mt. Albert, are both in the Auckland Hospital suffering from burns. The barrel had 1 been heated so that the remains of the tar would flow out, and when a lighted match was held near the bung hole, the barrel exploded. Both men were spattered with the boiling tar, Mr. Pickering being burned on the hands, arm, shoulder and side of the face, and Mr. Hammond on the hands and arms.
