SATURDAY’S CUP PLAY CORINTHIANS’ NARROW WIN MOUNTAIN ROVERS FOR FINAL The first round of the Soccer competition for the Kean Clarke Cup was played on Saturday afternoon' last at Kensington Park, when the Whangarei Corinthians beat • Whangarei by one goal to nil. On Hotel Parle. Hikurangi, Mountain Rovers, beat Waro by two goals to one. At Kensington Park. The game between the two local rivals, Whangarei and Corinthians, was played at a fast pace throughout and althbugh the Corinthians won. by one goal to nil, Whangarei were unlucky not to equalise in the last few minutes. ■ . , Swann kicked off for Whangarei, Gribble taking the ball up the field to centre to Lornie, who sent behind. From the behind kick Mcllroy secured, but after a good run on the left wing, was robbed by Johnson. Midfield play was broken by Jennings, who. after a tricky run, was beaten by Caldwell, who transferred for Stockwell to centre well. Mcllroy shot behind. 'Swann was then seen in a solo effort, but his shot went wide. Following a dull period, Everett secured, and beating his man,, sent an easy one over the crossbar. Five minutes later, the same player headed one over the bar. Mcllroy then secured and' centred to Everett, who, after beating Johnson, transferred to Gardner, who 1 put in a beautiful kick, which gave the goalie, Clapham, no chance. —Corinthians 1, Whangarei 0. came With the score unaltered.
Upon resuming, the reds (Whangarei) set up a hot attack, but the solid defence of Caldwell (goalie), Gardner and Hill, backs, held. A period of give and take play waS brought to a close by Mcllroy getting away on the wing. He centred perfectly for Everett to head ovsr the bar. From the behind kick, Swann, Gribble and Adams were seen in a splendid short passing bout, but Caldwell , got his side out of a hot corner by kicking behind. From the corner kick, Swann shot behind. The game was held up for a few , seconds by McNeil being hurt, but he soon recovered. The' reds then set up a determined effort, but could not score and so the Corinthians ran out winners by one goal t6' nil. How They Went.
For the winners, Gardner played' a fine game at full-back. Stewart and McNeil, at halves, were sound on defence, while' Mcllroy tried hard in the forwards.
For the losers. Jennings, at centre half, saved his team by repeatedly breaking up the blue attacks. Swann was a trier all the*'way; but Gribble should not ■ try to beat his man so much. Johnson playedi well at fullback, while Clapham was ever on the alert in goal. Next Saturday, Corinthians will meet Mountain Rovers in the final for the cup.
