MANGONUI WIN

N. ZONE FINAL SCRAMBLE AT KAITAIA. WHANGAROA 9 POINTS LIGHT. On Saturday Mangonui scored a victory over Wlrangaroa and thus qualified to contest the Harding Shield with Whangarei, winning side in the southern zone. The game, which was played at Kaitaia, to say the best, was nothing better than a scramble. However, towards the end of the second spell, both teams ■were giving a better exhibition. An outstanding, though by no means an uncommon feature of this contest, was the late arrival of the home team. The match was staged to commence at 2.30, at which time Whangaroa were on the ground and ready to start. It was not until 45 minutes later that the Mangonui team arrived. Teams. Whangaroa.—Rangi Tahu, A. McKeown, A. Johns, Paewai, S. Hona, S, Taniora, S. Smith, P. Herbert, T. Rudolph, W. Taniora, F. Blutcher, W. Sheppherd, H. Blutcher, Rika, Hudspith. Mangonui.—D. Urlich T. Walters, G. Porter, H. Yates, A. Dale, R. Smith, P. Pellman, Wilkinson, Wright, M. Richards, Frear, Ricketts, Berghan, T. Smith, M. Yates. Mangonui (blacks) kicked off into the sun and play went to the Whangaroa (reds) twenty-five. From a scrum Pellman opened the game up but G. Walters dropped a simple pass when only a few yards from the line. Play was held up for some minutes while Johns received attention. He was later forced to leave the field and was replaced by King. For the next ten minutes the reds were defending their line, but gained relief through a penalty. The blacks again returned, and Dale gathering in the leather cut out two men before sending to Smith, to Porter, and to Yates, who failed to connect. The red winger, _ McKeown, collected a line kick from Urlich and put in a nice run to be overhauled by H. Yates well in the black quarter. This was the first occasion during 20 minutes that Whangaroa had entered Mangohui’s territory, but their sojourn there was short, for R. Smith, receiving from the loose, set off to send to Dale, to Porter, to Walters, who crossed to draw first blood for Mangonui. M. Yates’ attempt to goal was charged down. —Blacks 3; Reds 0. Second Spell. The second spell had not been in progress many minutes before the blacks further increased their lead. M. Yates, from a handy position, put over a penalty.—Blacks 6, Reds 0. Mangonui’s lead seemed to give them confidence and they were now giving a better exhibition. The Reds, too, in their endeavour to make up the points against them were throwing the leather about in much better style. Evidence of this was seqn when the Whangaroa half, Smith, collecting from a scrum, set his backs going, but Paewai, the winger was overbalanced by D. Urlich. This was one of the best passing bouts of the day. Following closely on this M. Berghan broke away and sent on to H. Yates, who cut in and made the opening for Ricketts, who went over. M. Yates failed to raise the flags.—Blacks 9; Reds 0. The reds were given an opportunity to break their “duck,” but King missed a “sitter.” Then Pellam worked the bilnd side and sent H. Yates away. He was pulled down by the red custodian, Tahu, near the corner flag. Mangonui Again. Following closely on this attempt H. Yates again put in a fine run, but lacked support. M. Berghan again came into the limelight and, snapping up the ball on the half-way line, put in a penetrating run before sending to Dale who sent R. Smith over to score Mangonui's last try. M. Yates again failed to convert. —Black 12; Reds 0. The Reds were now playing their best game, but limited time made it impossible to catch up Mangonui’s lead. Several penetrating attacks were made by the forwards, while the backs i were handling the ball well. -From a I good position in blaclc territory Whangaroa secured a penalty and T. Bramley, who had replaced H. Blucher. put over a fine goal.—Blacks 12; Reds 3. This small inducement inspired thereds and they were getting much the better of the game. Hov/ever, thentask was an impossible one and the final whistle went to find the score. — j Mangonui 12 i Whangaroa *... 3 j Mr F. Job was the referee. j
