CONTESTS IN OTHER CENTRES
NEW PLYMOUTH—Bustling tactics throughout the game won Saturday’s Rugby representative match for Manawatu against Taranaki by 16 points to 13. Play was of poor standard, except, for a few bright patches. Taranaki’s experimental half-back and first fiveeighths, the Sangster brothers, failed rather dismally, with the result that an outstanding three-quarter line was starved for opportunities. Still, Manawatu was an improved team and’ played with great vim. Each team scored three tries and converted two. Manawatu won by a penalty goal. For Manawatu. Right scored two tries and Blyth one. Beard converted two tries and kicked a penalty goal. For Taranaki’, Edwards, Sullivan and Galbraith scored tries. Collins converted two. Taranaki played a long way below TGcil strength ASHBURTON.—Ashburton beat the Buller touring team on Saturday by 15 points to 12. The majority of points came from penalties. Ashburton opened well, with two tries in the first few minutes, and led at half-time by 15 points to 6. Buller maintained its form, but Ashburton faded in the IflffPT* of 3 INVERCARGILL.—Otago defeated Southland by 20 points to 3 in the eighteenth Rugby game between the provinces, played at Rugby Park on Saturday in fine weather. The ground was slightly heavy, but the ball was dry throughout, and there was no excuse for the drab exhibition of football offered to a large crowd, Otago was the much better balanced team, the forwards showing greater dash than Southland and the backs playing all over the opposition, of whom the inside trio were not up to representative standard. All Otago’s tries were scored by the wing-three-quarters, Proctor and Gold, the former being outstanding.
