MANAWATU GORGE
CLEARING THE SLIP ROAD CLOSED FOR MONTH i t Special to "Northern Advocate”! PALMERSTON N., This Day. A gang of 20 men is now engaged on repairing the slip on the highway through the Manawatu Gorge, but it is anticipated that it will be at least a month before the road is open* again for traffic. It is estimated that at least 10,000 yards of soil was displaced, and a gaping hole 100 ft. high has been made in the hillside, which at this point is over 200 feet high. Temporary telephone and telegraphic communication with Napier and Woodville was restored by 8 o’clock yesterday morning. Other parts of the gorge | appeared to be in a dangerous state, i and prior to the last slip over 70 | miniqr slips had to be cleared. Over 10 small slips occurred yesterday near the Palmerston North end of the gorge.
