DEATH OF MAORI GIRL

Widespread sympathy was shown by the Maori population towards Mr and Mrs Paratene, of Ahipara, who lost their daughter, Gladys, in distressing circumstances.

The girl received fatal injuries as the result of a fall from a truck near the Ahipara School on July 17. The funeral was largely attended, those present including many of the girl’s former schoolmates and companions. For the final stages, school children were the pall-bearers. Many floral tributes were sent. The party who had accompanied the deceased to the Whangarei Winter Show sang appropriate hymns at the church. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. Mutu Rapa.
