TERRIFIC EXPLOSION

munitions factory ITALIAN DISASTER AT LEAST 55 KILLED SEQUEL TO ABYSSINIAN PREPARATIONS (Received 9 a.m.) ROME, July 27. At least 55 workers, most of them girls, are believed to have been killed jn a series of explosions in the packing department of a munitions factory at Varese, where the production of bombs, fuses and hand grenades for the Italian expedition had necessitated an augmented staff. The explosion was so terrific that debris was flung great distances, and windows were broken 15 miles away. A pall of smoke and fumes hampered rescue work, which soldiers and Black Shirts began immediately. It is believed that nobody who was working in the department escaped death. An eye-witness relates how a great sheet of flame went up from one shed, accompanied by a deafening report, which was echoed , as neighbouring sheds exploded. Weeping crowds of people surrounded the gates, seeking news' of relatives.
