BRITAIN WEIL PLACED IN DAVIS CUP

CHALLENGE ROUND AGAINST AMERICA AUSTIN AND PERRY WIN SINGLES. ALLISON’S SURPRISING “FADE OUT.” [United Press Association-By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright.] (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 27. The challenge round of the DaviS Cup contest between Britain (holder of the trophy) and America was commenced today at Wimbledon. The first two singles matches were won by Britain. Details are: Austin defeated Allison, 6—2, 2—6, 4—6, 6—3, 7—5. Perry defeated Budge, 6—o, 6—B, 6—3, 6—4. There were 15,000 spectators of the play on the centre court, which was fast. The weather was bright arid windy. , . ’ . Austin showed superb control. Driving with unerring length and volleying prettily, he took the first set, in which Allison’s service made no impression. Allison hit harder and more accurately and equally dominated the second set, Serving and volleying still more powerfully, he outplayed Austin in the third. Allison started erratically after an interval. Austin, placing accurately, held the fourth set. The fifth was splendidly fought, Austin levelling from I—3, the. delicate mechanism of his game just prevailing over the more robust American, in spite of the latter leading 5—4, upon which he lost his service. Allison’s surprising “fade out” left America little hope on the day. „ , „ . Perry practically walked through the first set against Budge, who did not play one noteworthy stroke. In the second set, Budge drove better and led 3 —l and 5 —4. Perry was dashingly agile and aggressive, and retained the lead, 6 5, but Budge’s great cross-court back- ' hands took the set. Budge’s keen driving brought out all the wonderful resources of Perry’s game, which in the fourth set were seen to still better advantage. Perry’s acrobatic volleying, the great speed of his footwork and his ceaseless attacking neutralised the American’s fine capacity for making winning drives. Budge from 0 c gamely counter-attacked, but Perry was too well equipped. , In the doubles on Monday, Hughes and Tuckey will play Allison and Van Ryn. ’ ' _ , . In the final singles on Tuesday Austin will play Budge, and Perry will meet Allison.
