FOOTBALLER IN HOSPITAL
WELLS’ BROKEN JAW HIKURANGI LEAGUER’S MISFORTUNE While playing in his second game this season, as a member of the newlyconstituted Hikurangi colts thirteen Alan (Pompa) Wells suffered a fracture of the upper jaw-bone at Kensington Park on Saturday. Wells, who is a married man, aged 32, is well-known as an expert hooker. He had not turned out this until'the Cobs’ team was formed at Hikurangi, • and he took his place with several other players on the verge of retirement. The accident occurred in a melee on Hikurangi’s line during a hot offensive by the City forwards. Tn diving to save a try, Wells struck his face on the knee of one of his own men, with the aforementioned result. He was admitted to the Whangarei District Hospital, where his condition is reported to be improving.
