MOTOR VEHICLES TARIFF

PROPOSED ALTERATION. SOUTHERN FIRM CONCERNED. (Per Press Association. — Copyright.} CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The proposed alteration to the tariff relating to the importation of motor vehicles in a knocked-down condition has caused concern to the proprietors of a flourishing Christchurch factory, the Lace Web Company, Ltd. This company has developed an extensive business in supplying seat spring assemblies for cars being put together in New Zealand. /

It is stated that the proposed change will permit the importation of seat springs in frames, and that this will destroy the New Zealand industry. In the last year the staff of the Lace Web Company, has been increased from 19 to 60, and the manager stated yesterday that last week’s plans had been considered for trebling the capacity of the factory.
