EXPORT OF FRUIT
EXTENSION OF MARKETS
[Per Press Association. — Copyright.! WELLINGTON, This Day.
The necessity fox’ the extension of markets for the fruit-growing industry was emphasised at the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board’s conference yesterday, when a remit was under consideration providing that the Government be urged to assist the board in reopening markets in Germany and France for New Zealand fruit.
Mr J. L. Brown, of Nelson, in supporting the remit, said the difficulty lay in -the fact that there was no reciprocal trade. New Zealand bought little from Germany, and less from France. The remit was carried. Another remit was carried, asking that an endeavour be ma'He to secure a guarantee on experimental fruit and fruit shipped to new markets sufficient to cover the cost of production.
Mr R. Paynter, the chairman, stated*" that recently the board had an inquiry from Calcutta for 2000 cases of apples, and another inquiry had been received from Hong Kong for apples, the price "being very satisfactory, namely, 16/- a case. Unfortunately the board had no stocks to supply these markets, and it might be that in future the board would have to hold stocks in order to fill orders of this nature. It was essential, if possible, to develop new markets and be able to meet the demand when it arose, particularly in view of the possibility of the contraction of the United Kingdom market.
