“THE GIRL OF THE LIMBERLOST.”
FARE AT THE PLAZA,
If you enjoyed “Anne of Green Gables,” and if you enjoyed it even more than “Little Women,” then you are assured of a real treat in “The Girl of the Limberlost,” penned by the mighty pen of Gene Stratton Porter, as it is very similar in type to both of the above attractions, and if possible, even better, and yet is definitely in a class by itself. The human interest is remarkable, and convinces one very forcibly that it is not a picture that you will be seeing when attending the Plaza, but a page torn from real life. This gripping story is as beautiful as nature herself. Written with a pen dipped in the heart of humanity, “The Girl of the Limberlost” is fiction’s most beloved romance. The story concerns itself with a young girl who lives with her mother in the Limberlost, The mother is embittered towards her daughter, because through her she was unable to save her husband from being sucked to his death in the swamp, and in spite of kindly neighbours’ efforts to reconcile her with her child, she persists in her cold hatred, which increases with the years, Elnora collects moths and butterflies from the swamp, which she sells to a kindly “bird woman,” and so obtains her school fees. The human'drama of her struggles for happiness, combined with her love for her mother, and her eventual triumph over the trials that beset her, and the manner in which she wins through to true love, form a poignant and beautiful story. The exceptionally able cast is headed by beautiful Marian Marsh, star of many American productions, who gives what is without doubt her best performance to date, and in support such well-known stars as Ralph Morgan, Louise Dresser, and Edward Nugent. Louise Dresser, who plays the part of the mother, gives an outstanding performance. She takes the role of the embittered woman who is gradually won over by her daughter’s charm, with exceptional ability. Ralph Morgan as the friendly neighbour, who with the help of his wife aids the forlorn Elnora, is very good. It is sufficient to say that it’s author is none other than, as already mentioned, the epic writer —Gene Stratton Porter, author of “Laddie,” “Freckles," “Keeper of the Bees.” and many other beloved books. “Girl of the Limberlost” is screened finally tonight at the Plaza Theatre.
