KAITAIA The ladies of the Kaitaia Anglican Church held a five hundred card evening in the Parish Hall on Tuesday. The prize-winners were Mrs Rickards and Miss C. Holder (highest scores), and Mrs Head and Mr Powell. «•> S> <s> <s> Mr Frank Mackenzie, who has been on the staff of the Kaitaia Dairy Factory at Awanui, has received an appointment at the Mercury Bay factory, Coromandel. <♦> <♦> <£> <*> <S> On Tuesday-, the Kaitaia Girls' Auxiliary held a social which, despite the unfavourable weather,- was well attended. The evening opened with a competition, the winner being Mrs A. Mackenzie. The Rev. Nicholas then gave a talk on the work which the Girls’ Auxiliary was doing in the North. A short missionary play, “Go Tell,” was presented by G.A. members, those taking part being: —Primrose, Miss M. McKinnon; Aurora, Miss F. Black; Japanese girl. Miss E. Dennis; African girl. Miss N. Cade; Australian girl, Miss W. Crene; Indian girl, Miss D. Coulter. After a talk on ‘'missions had been given by Rev. Nicholas, the rest of the evening was spent in games and : the singing of the camp choruses. Recitations were given by David Archibald and Miss Mavis McKinnon. Supper was provided by the G.A. members. <S> <S> <s> <?> <S> Mr and Mrs W. Rippingale. have returned to their >bome in Ngpake after a short visit to Kaitaia. where they were the guests of Mrs Wild.

The Anglican Ladies’ Guild met on Tuesday afternoon. The president welcomed new members. A busy time was spent in sewing and knitting. Hostesses for the afternoon werehMesdames Atkin. H. Mclntosh and Miss Atkin.

PUKEPOTO A dance organised by the members of the Pukepoto School Committee, in aid of their funds, was hold in the Rarawa Hall on Monday evening. The music was supplied by Messrs. W. Cameron and C. Robson. Mr F. Job was M.C. and the usual good supper was provided by the ladies.

Kitchen returned .on Tuesday evening after a short holiday in Auckland. <s> <s> <g> <s> <s> Mr and Mrs O. Irving, of Takahue, returned on Wednesday after a month’s holiday with Mr Irving’s parents in Remuera.

BROADWOOD An interesting debate, "Town Life v. Country Life.” took place between a few of the Broadwood school children of Stds. 5 and 6. Master L. Edwards was chairman, and the speakers were: For Town Life. Vera Gregory. Marjory Hornell, Logan Downey. Charles Gregory; for Country Life, June Newman, Avery Hansen. Lawrence Middleton. At the July meeting of the Broadwood Mothers League. Mrs C.hapell. of Auckland, the Broadwood delegate to the Auckland conferences, gave an address on details of the conference held in honour of Lady Galway. Visitors welcomed to the meeting were Mrs J. Bowater. Mrs F. Palmer and Mrs Buss. Mrs G. Hyde sang “Flowers of the Forest,” Miss Newman playing the accompanniment. Tea was served by the Te Karae branch. <$ <?> <s> <s> <j> -

Mr and Mrs C. Keene, of Tauranga, and Mr Randall Keene, of Waipukurau, Hawke’s Bay, are spending a few weeks with Mr and Mrs L. Keene, of Te Paki Station. <s> <s> <S> <s> <s>

A remarkable incident took place at Parengarenga recently—the first of its kind in the 70 years of European history. A consignment of spirituous liquor arrived at Quart Pot Beach, when to the astonishment and consternation of the inhabitants, the consignee refused to take delivery, and the liquid was returned to Waipapakauri.

ORURU A kitchen and gift evening arranged by Mrs G. Taylor, was tendered' Mr Trevor Garton in the Oruru Hall on Tuesday evening, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The programme of dances was ably controlled by Mr W. Thomas, and the Red Pepper Dance Band supplied the music; extras being played by Miss Kelly and Miss N. Taylor, and Messrs. Stan and Ernie Harris. Miss Iris Gardiner and Mr W. Garton won the Monte Carlo waltz. Mr C. J. E. Barriball extended the wellwishes of many friends to the guest of the evening, for the future, and asked his acceptance of the many and varied presents. Mr Garton replied, expressing appreciation of the efforts cf those responsible and thanking all for their kindness. WAIHARARA The Waiharara Tennis and Bowling Club held a dance in Srhoz’s Hall, Waiharara, on Saturday. There was a fairly large attendance. Mr M. Srhoz was M.C. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss E. Steed and Mr J. Stewart, and a competition for a box of chocolates was won by R. Steed.
