KAITAIA SITTING. DECISIONS GIVEN. [Svevial to "Northern Advocate/'] KAITAIA, This Day. The sitting of the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority was continued at Kaitaia yesterday. Mr W. Jones presided. S. C. Masters asked for a license for goods of all classes for the following ridings in the Mangonui County:— Ahipara (excluding Ahipara Hill), Herekino, Victoria Valley,,Kaitaia and Awanui, and for a license to carry timber over the whole county. C. A. McCarthy applied for a general goods license from Ahipara to Awanui, and Kaitaia to Double Crossing. Mr McCarthy said that having secured the cream carting contract he was desirous of having a goods license. He would be making about 290 trips a year. D. Archibald, senr., gave evidence in support of the application. Mr R. H. Kelly objected on behalf of several operators. There were at present four or five licensed vehicles over the route, he said, and added that McCarthy, in tendering for the cream contract, had deliberately brought the price down, relying upon a goods license to make it a payable proposition. Mr McCarthy: “That is what Mr Masters did with me.” Mr. Kelly: “Carried to extremes, a man who wants a goods license could take a cream contract for nothing. There is no objection to McCarthy carrying parcels, but manures and full loads of goods will be objected to.”
Mr Reynolds also objected on behalf of another operator.
Mr Yarborough: “Would you be satisfied with 150 lbs?”
Mr. McCarthy: “That would be too low and would exclude the carriage of benzine.”
The chairman: “Suppose we confine the carriage of goods to supplies only.” , ,
Mr Kelly doubted if that* would meet the position, as- practically all on the road were suppliers. My client, he said, would agree to McCarthy having the right to carry up to 5 qwt, so as to include benzine. c
A license was granted for one vehicle over the route from Awanui to Ahipara and Kaitaia to Double Crossing for all classes of goods except live stock, no individual consignment to exceed 5 cwt.
Other Applications,
W. B. Beard, in applying for a renewal of his license, asked for the right to carry two passengers on his cream routes and between Awanui and Kohukohu.
