NO WORKERS FOR WHEAT FIELDS
UNEMPLOYED PREFER DOLE
RELIEF PAYMENTS STOPPED. (Received 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 20. A message from Des Moines,, lowa, states that, in order to meet the labour shortage in the wheat fields, with the harvest’ season reaching its height, the relief headquarters in 16 counties have stopped dole payments to force the unemployed to accept work. The prevailing pay is two dollars a day, with keep. Planters complain bitterly that most of the normal labour supply is now on relief. The majority of the men refuse to accept work at comparable rates.
State Governors throughout the wheat belt are preparing to take drastic action to force the unemployed to acept work unless the Federal Government intervenes.
