AID FOR WORKLESS

A SUBSIDY OFFER. ALTERNATIVE SCHEME. t How can Whangarei find money to provide an increased amount of assistance to unemployed workers? In a letter which was considered by the Borough Council last night, the Minister of Employment stated that the Ohinemuri County Council and the Paeroa Borough Council recently agreed to find £I4OO to provide additional work for local men on Scheme No. 5. To assist these local bodies the board agreed to provide, in addition to the usual Scheme 5 ration a subsidy on a £1 for £2 basis on wages expended by these local bodies in providing additional work to registered and eligible unemployed. An alternative offer would be a subsidy on the basis of 35/ per man-week in respect of the full-time employment at standard rates of wages of registered and eligible married men. If funds were raised in Whangarei, the letter added, the Unemployment Board would be prepared to consider the extension of a subsidy 'on the same basis as was extended to the Ohinemuri County Council and Paeroa Borough Council. The attention of the Jubilee Employment Fund Committee and the Works Committee is to be drawn to the letter.
