HOLIDAY FOR SCHOOLS

MAORI WELCOME TO GOVERNOR. School committees may, if they desire, grant a holiday on Thursday so that children may see the Maori welcome to the Governor-General, Lord Galway. A telegram received by Mr H. W. James, chairman of the Winter Show Committee, from the Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Education, gave ‘ that information. this morning. The Minister said that as the Whangarei schools were controlled by the Auckland Education Board, the matter was one entirely for that body. He had been in touch with the board, and understood that the matter of the holiday was discussed when the board decided that committees might give the holiday as one of the three special closings allowed under the regulations. The native schools were controlled by the Education Department, but he understood no native school was likely to be involved as the nearest was 16 miles from Whangarei.
