THE LIGHTS OF WHANGAREI
CLAIMS OF MAUNU ROAD. IMPRESSION ON VISITORS. A resident of Maunu Road, speaking to an “Advocate” representative yesterday, and emphasising that first impressions are the most lasting, said j that visitors coming from the North and arriving in Whangarei via Bank Street at night receive an excellent impression of the town on account of the superior lighting system in Bank Street. But, the resident pointed, out, mors visitors come in to Whangarei via Maunu Road than Bank Street. Dargaville, Mangakahia and many Hokianga visitprs used Maunu Road and Water Street to make their entrance into the town. The OakleighOtaika Corner Road carried all visitors from the Otamatea and Rodney counties, and then as far south as Wellington. He pointed out that all visitors to the North from any part of New Zealand, unless they travel by rail or steamer, receive their first impressions of Whangarei on arrival at Otaika Corner. That being the case, the lighting system from the business area to Otaika Corner was entitled to greater consideration than Bank Street. Many who came from the North only made return journeys to Whangarei, having fa’st .entered the town along Maunu Road and Water Street. it would, he said, add to the attractions of Whangarei if the approaching road mentioned were lighted equally with Bank Street.
