OPIUM DEALING
. ATTEMPT TO BRIBE POLICE. FINE OP £350 INFLICTED. [Per ‘Press Association. — Copyright.l DUNEDIN. This Day. George Fong was today fined £350 on a charge of dealing in prepared opium. Charges of selling opium and having smoking apparatus in his possession were dismissed. The penalty in default of payment was six months’ imprisonment. Seven days were allowed to find the money. Security for appeal was fixed at £lO 10/. In announcing the conviction, the magistrate referred to the fact that 24 tins of opium had been found in Fong’s possession, 21 of which were parcelled to correspondents, which seemed to indicate inquiries for opium. He referred also to the large sum accused had banked (£1250 last year, though he had only a small laundry) and to the list of dangerous drugs in his possession. Further His Worship spoke of accused’s attempt to bribe the police with £SO and of the. admission that he had received money for opium. All these facts, said the magistrate, were factors in his decision to convict accused.
