OVER £4OO STOLEN

SAFE BLOWERS AT WORK. DRAPERY FIRM’S LOSS. tPer Press Association. — Copyright .] CHRISTCHURCH, This pay. Safe-blowers were at work in the city early this morning. They entered the premises of Hays, Ltd., a drapery firm in Gloucester Street, and stole a sum believed to exceed £4OO. All the offices were ransacked in the search for keys to open the safe before the burglars resorted to explosives. Mattresses and a carpet were piled over the safe to deaden the sound of the explosion. A nightwatchfnan who pays periodical visits to the building arrived on the scene within 15 minutes of the occurrence. The burglars apparently used some children’s sox as mittens in order to guard against leaving finger-prints. It is evident that the amount of gelignite was carefully calculated, being just sufficient to shatter the locks and bolts inside. The burglars gained entrance by a window at the rear after climbing from the roof of an adjacent building.
