LYTTELTON BY-ELECTION
NO DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE. OFFICIAL STATEMENT. ISpecial to “Northern Advocate”! WELLINGTON, This Day. The following statement was issued today by Mr E. Davy, on behalf of the Dominion Executive of the New Zealand Democratic political organisation:— “Although the Democratic Party is definitely opposed to the Socialist policy of both Nationalist and the Labour Party, the Democrat organisation has no intention, of contesting the Lyttelton by-election, for the following reason. —In view of the nearness of the general election, we consider a ‘by-election a clear waste of public money and that it will serve no useful purpose. In our opinion, the Labour candidate should be elected unopposed for that reason, and in addition, that his election would make no difference to the position of parties in the House. # “We wish to state quite definitely, however, that we will contest the Lyttelton seat at the general election. It is our purpose to contest every constituency, and our candidates, including one for Lyttelton will be announced in due course;”
