WINEMAKERS' LABELS
MUST BE PRINTED. ONE TREE POINT MAN FINED. Winemakers’ labels must be printed and not written. It was a lapse in this respect which brought George Urlich into the Police Court today to answer two charges of selling wine without having the name of the licensee printed on the labels on the bottles.
Mr D. Baird appeared for th’lich, who admitted the charge.
Senior-Sergeant Finch said Urlich, about four years ago, had bought his wine-making business from a man at One Tree Point. Defendant had been using the labels which he obtained with the business, striking out the previous owner’s name and writing in his own. That did not comply with the law.. Labels had to be printed, not written. Mr G. N. Morris, . S.M.: “If the entire label had been written it would have been more serious.” Mr Baird said that Urlich had obtained a rubber stamp which he used to cross out the previous owner’s name and print in his own. However, the ink for that had run out and in these cases Urlich had crossed out the other name and written in his own. Counsel thought the case 1 trivial and technical and asked that it be treated as such.
. “In an ordinary way,” said the magistrate, “this is a serious offence. This case, however, is not so serious. I do think it would have been difficult for anyone to identify the wine.”
Urlich was fined £1 and costs on the first charge and ordered to pay costs on the second charge.
