SWIMMING

NEW ZEALAND TITLES INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR [Per Press Association. — Copyright.! TIMARU, This Day. The New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships commenced at Timaru on Saturday in ideal weather, and a large crowd was privileged to witness some fine swimming. No fewer than 63 competitors were present, representing seven provinces. Auckland and Otago are very strongly represented, and there is likely to be keen competition between these two for the championship shield. Otago made a good start, securing two firsts and two seconds, against Auckland’s first and third.

The surprise of the day was the defeat of Miss E. Rainey, of Auckland, in the 220 yards girls’ intermediate event, the winner being Miss D. Symon, Southland, who has been performing well in the South recently. She won the 100 yards and 220 yards junior titles last year, and fully deserved her latest success. Miss Rainey swam below form and was able to gain third place only. Jarvis and Pascoe were expected to fight out the 100 yards intermediate boys’ event. In their heat Jarvis beat Pascoe and won the final rather easily, Pascoe being out of a place. Barry, Otago, swam a good race to gain second place. The 100 yards junior boys’ free style was a great race. McGregor, Otago, finished strongly to beat another promising Southlander in T. Bach. Auckland’s only win of the day was secured by Miss G. Priestley in the 50 yards junior girls’ breaststroke, Miss Knowles, Otago, being a foot away. Championship results were:— > Championship 50 Yards Junior Girls’ Breaststroke. —G. Priestley 1, C.
