BRITISH-ISRAELISM
DISCUSSION BY CHURCHMEN. [Per Press Association. — Copyright .] DUNEDIN. This Day. The Presbyterian General Assembly yesterday considered a resolution from the Auckland Presbytery recommending that an official statement be prepared making clear the church’s position with regard to British Israelism. The petitioners asked for full investigation of the claims that the AngloSaxon people were God’s ancient people of Israel. It was finally decided to appoint a committee to prepare a resolution and report to a late session of the assembly but there was considerable discussion. The Rev. James Mills mentioned the desirability of toleration. The Assembly Clerk said the church was prepared to tolerate the views of these people, but wore they prepared to tolerate the church’s views? The Rev. J. Steele (Duntroon) said • it would be regrettable if the impression were given that the church rc- ' garded British Israelism as a serious danger. It was a danger to only a few cranks and disaffected minds. No per--1 son of intelligence could entertain its teachings.
